A real coaching story about fear, courage, and rediscovering your spark.
The Weight of Playing Safe
You know that feeling when you’re doing fine… but not alive? That was the kind of weariness she walked in with — not the tiredness of overwork, but the fatigue of holding back what was waiting to bloom.
She was a Senior Scientist in a reputed pharmaceutical firm. With over 15 years of experience, she was respected, well-published, and known for her curiosity.
But she wasn’t happy.
“I used to feel excited about my work,” she said.
“Now I feel like I’m managing other people’s research more than doing my own.”
She had tried moving to other roles. She had even considered quitting. But she hadn’t found the courage to have that one conversation — the one that could change everything.
So she stayed. Day after day. Dragging herself through routines that once thrilled her, silencing the part of her that thrived on discovery and creation.
The Question That Shifted Everything
I asked her, “If your salary, title, or designation didn’t matter… what would you love to do each day?”
There was a pause — the kind of silence that holds truth inside it. Then, a visible shift. Her eyes softened. She leaned forward.
“I’d be back at the bench — doing actual research.
I’d teach. I’d write papers again. That’s where I come alive.”
In that instant, her voice had energy again. It wasn’t rebellion — it was remembrance.
She wasn’t running from her role. She was finally facing what she’d been avoiding: her fear of being “ungrateful,” her fear of the unknown, and her deeper longing for authenticity.
From Clarity to Courage
Once clarity arrived, courage followed.
She identified four or five action steps — simple, tangible, real. The first one was the hardest:
“Have the conversation I’ve been avoiding with management.”
It wasn’t a dramatic “I quit!” moment. It was an act of integrity — of honouring her voice, values, and vocation.
That’s how real change begins — not with fireworks, but with one honest conversation.
Coach’s Reflection
So many capable professionals live inside quiet prisons of their own making — called comfort, stability, or security. But staying safe for too long can start to feel like self-betrayal.
You don’t have to burn it all down to begin again. You just need to find your spark — the small place inside that still wants to play, teach, create, or explore.
Sometimes, freedom begins not with a leap… but with a single question.
Call to Reflection
What part of your work truly excites you?
If nothing external mattered, what would you choose to do each day?
And is there a conversation you’ve been avoiding — that could set you free?
